Warning Signs
Cooling system faults always give warning before they cause engine damage. Recognising these signs early saves your engine.
The temperature gauge moves into the red zone or an overheating warning light activates. This is a critical warning — continued operation risks severe engine damage. Stop the vehicle immediately.
Bright green, orange, or pink fluid pooling under the vehicle indicates a coolant leak from a hose, the radiator, or a gasket. Any coolant loss reduces the system's ability to control engine temperature.
Visible steam or vapour rising from the bonnet is a sign of coolant boiling — either from extreme overheating or coolant contacting hot engine surfaces through a leak. Do not open the bonnet until the engine is cold.
A temperature gauge that climbs higher than its normal operating position — even if it does not reach the red zone — indicates the cooling system is under strain. This often happens in stop-start traffic or when towing.
Needing to add coolant regularly, without finding a visible external leak, may indicate an internal leak — possibly a failing head gasket allowing coolant to enter the combustion chamber or engine oil. This requires urgent diagnosis.

When the impeller wears, the shaft seal leaks, or the bearing fails, coolant circulation slows dramatically or stops entirely. The engine temperature then rises rapidly during operation. Most water pumps are driven by the timing belt or accessory belt and are best replaced together with these components.
Mechanical FailureCoolant hoses are subjected to constant heat cycling, pressure, and vibration. Over time rubber compounds harden, crack, and can develop pinhole leaks or catastrophic splits. Even a small leak reduces system pressure, lowering the boiling point of the coolant and triggering premature boiling under load. Hose condition should be inspected at every service — squeezing them reveals brittleness or softness that indicates replacement is needed.
Wear & AgeThe thermostat is a temperature-sensitive valve that controls coolant flow between the engine and radiator. When it fails stuck-closed, coolant does not reach the radiator and the engine overheats rapidly. When it fails stuck-open, the engine runs below optimal temperature — causing poor fuel economy, incomplete combustion, and accelerated engine wear. Thermostat replacement is an inexpensive preventive measure with significant protective value.
Component FailureFresh, correctly mixed coolant provides both freeze protection and corrosion inhibitors that prevent internal radiator and engine block damage. Over time the inhibitors deplete and coolant becomes acidic — actively corroding aluminium engine components and heat exchanger cores. Running low on coolant, or running with degraded coolant, reduces the system's heat capacity and removes internal protection. A coolant flush and refill is one of the most cost-effective preventive maintenance items available.
PreventableCooling systems have defined service intervals for coolant replacement, hose inspection, and system pressure testing. Ignoring these intervals allows corrosion to build in the radiator matrix, deposits to form on the water pump impeller, and degraded coolant to remain in the system — all progressing in silence until a component fails or the engine overheats.

Warning Signs
Electrical faults often start small — a slightly dim light, a slow starter — before escalating to a non-starting vehicle. Catch them early.
A sluggish or hesitant starter motor, slow engine cranking, or the engine failing to fire on the first attempt are early indicators of a weakening battery, failing starter motor, or corroded battery connections.
Headlights that are noticeably dimmer than usual — especially when idling — indicate the alternator is not producing sufficient voltage to power the vehicle's electrical systems while simultaneously charging the battery.
A battery that loses charge overnight or within a day of use indicates either a failing battery that can no longer hold charge, or a parasitic drain — a component remaining active and drawing current after the ignition is switched off.
Power windows, central locking, air conditioning, infotainment, or other electrical accessories failing intermittently or completely points to blown fuses, damaged wiring, or failing control modules within the vehicle's electrical network.
Battery, charging, or check engine warning lights illuminate when the vehicle's self-diagnostic system detects a confirmed fault in the electrical or charging circuit. These should never be ignored — the system is telling you a fault exists.
The alternator charges the battery during driving. When it fails, the vehicle initially runs on battery reserve alone — eventually going completely dead. Signs include a battery warning light, burning smell from the alternator area, or the vehicle dying shortly after starting.

Charging SystemThe vehicle's wiring harness contains hundreds of individual conductors routed throughout the body and engine bay. Chafing against metal edges, heat degradation, rodent damage, and vibration fatigue cause insulation to fail — producing short circuits that blow fuses repeatedly, cause intermittent electrical faults, or in severe cases, start electrical fires. Wiring issues are among the most time-consuming faults to diagnose and require systematic, experienced fault-finding.
Wiring HarnessBattery terminals and earth connections are exposed to moisture, heat, and battery outgassing — all of which cause corrosion of the contact surfaces. Even a thin layer of corrosion on a terminal introduces resistance that reduces cranking power, causes voltage drop throughout the vehicle, and can produce unreliable behaviour in electronically-controlled systems. Terminal cleaning and connection inspection is one of the simplest, lowest-cost preventive maintenance tasks available.
CorrosionThe starter motor is an electric motor that cranks the engine during starting. It is subjected to high current demands and extreme temperatures. The solenoid, brushes, and armature all wear over time — producing the characteristic slow crank, grinding engagement, or complete failure to turn over that signals starter replacement is needed. Ignoring an intermittently-failing starter often results in being stranded when it finally fails completely.
Component LifeWater infiltration — from flooding, poor body seals, or pressure washing — can destroy electrical connectors, corrode PCB contacts within control modules, and short circuit wiring looms.
